I have had Sumo Springs on the front of my Class C RV for years. They have been a significant improvement in terms of sway and stability. I knew I wanted them on the rear of my 2025 GMC Canyon. Specifically, I wanted them for when I would be using the vehicle for towing. I anticipate them helping with vehicle squat and stability. Remember, Sumo Springs do not increase the vehicle's tow rating, hitch pin weight, or the vehicle's cargo carrying capacity.
Sumo Springs are also designed to only engage when the truck has weight added to it and should not affect the ride while unloaded. For the 3rd generation GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado (2023-2025), non-diesel, the model of rear Sumo Springs is SSR-212-40. They also make front coil Sumo Springs, which I did not purchase. In the box are two rear Sumo Springs, two mounting plates, four mounting brackets, blue thread locker, necessary hardware, and installation instructions.
The install is a simple bolt-on procedure with no drilling or vehicle modification needed. The first step was to attach a mounting plate to each of the Sumo Springs with an M8 bolt. For the installation onto the truck, you can remove the rear wheels and slightly lift the rear of the truck for easier access. I did neither and had no problem with the installation. Starting with the driver's side, I placed two mounting brackets over the vehicle frame just below the wheel liner and to the rear of the factory bump stop.
From underneath the truck, I was able to place the Sumo Spring under the vehicle frame just below the two previously installed mounting brackets. Four carriage bolts are then used to attach the assembly to the truck. There was no torque specification noted, but as I tightened the bolts, I could see the top mounting plates bend into the frame of the truck, knowing it was tight.
The passenger side follows the same procedure as the driver's side, except I had to work around the muffler, making it a little more cumbersome. Overall, it took about 15 minutes per side to install and was quite easy. I used a 9/16 socket and some extension bars to reach all the bolts easily. A small impact wrench would have made things even faster. Overall, a user-friendly install process. You can see the links below for the Sumo Springs and the tools I used, including a link for the installation instructions. You can also watch the video of the installation.
